Sarah-Jane Perry (Eng) 2-1 Emily Whitlock (Eng) 7-11, 11-8, 11-8 (34m)
Oh boy. Whatever Emily is on, I want some. That girl was on fire tonight, and really twisted and turned SJ for a game and 2 points, outplaying her really and never letting the Tall Lady any time on the ball.
But from 2/0 down in the second, the experience of Sarah Jane, and the summer training came into action, 3/3, 9/4. Emily, a big push at the end, finding that length and power she had in the first game came back, so close but it’s still SJ 11/8 in 11m again, as the first game was.
The third is point for point really up to 7/7, such fine lines, a little misshit and a great winner from SJ, 9/7. A sublime rally that gets the crowd roaring for me, 8/9 but and an error and a great depth to close it, 11/8 in 10m….
The crowds have been great all week and weirdly, it is really nice when your opponent plays a good rally and they clap, because you then know not to beat yourself up too much. The crowd were fantastic and every point at the end they were up“We played in a club match about six months ago and I am not sure that was actually the same player. She has improved massively and she just came out firing. I watched her the other day and she did the same. It took me a game to get into it, despite telling myself not to do that.
Six months ago, I played her in a league match, I got my dates wrong, just off the plane and on to court, I beat her 3/1, and it was not like too difficult. Who is that player I played!!! She is a completely different player today, she was moving well, she improved her short game, and I found myself having to have to go a couple of gears up to contain her!
Also, I didn’t really get to play at a fast pace since I arrived where she got to go those gears up two days ago, and it took me a while to get going I think.
In the second, I had to stop crosscourting, and I had to attack before if I wasn’t, she was, and picking me off.
I think the pace was higher than if we played a BO5. Let me put it this way. There is NO WAY I would have been able to sustain such a pace in BO5!!!
I worked hard all summer so I was happy to run but I wanted to play as well, and like I said, I had to attack, otherwise, she would have…
I had to really dig in there and in the end, I thought I was moving better than I expected to. I think that just about got me over the line in the end. I am happy to come through that because she is playing some really good squash.
